Recovery and Complications
​
The length of time the recovery will take varies to each individual baby. In many cases milk is usually re-introduced gradually 10-14 days after feeds are stopped. It may also take a few days for a baby to finish antibiotic treatment or other medications.
Sometimes complications are possible, especially if there has been surgery to the bowel.
These complications are:

Problems with wound and infection

Some babies may develop problems with milk tolerance and Diarrhoea

The bowel may become narrower causing a stricture

Some babies may have problems with food absorption and growth

Some babies may have Short bowel syndrome

Some babies especially very premature babies can have developmental delays.
